Considered as one among twelve of the world’s best beaches – the curvy stretch of beach in Colombo’s western coast called Unawatuna, and is a splendid way of letting go.
Thousands of tourists who visit the island at some point make a beeline for the cool turquoise blue waters of Unawatuna for some sun, sand and to catch a few waves. The natural reef which has developed along its coastline makes it safe to enjoy the area, especially when swimming or bathing with children.
While the island is full of legends and myths that have been interwoven into its culture, locals believe that the rocky range which protrudes from the sea in Unawatuna is associated with the famed legend of Ramayana.
The range, known as Rumassala they believe is part of a rock which fell when Hanuman – the Monkey God who carried a piece of a mountain, hoping to obtain herbs from it in order to care for the wounded brother of Rama, all details of which are included in the epic Ramayana story. The name Unawatuna is derived from the Sinhalese phrase ‘Unna Watna’ meaning ‘there it fell’ and so the belief developed around this thinking.
The beautiful surrounding of Unawatuna is further enhanced, by the city’s Dutch architecture which still remains intact. Unlike the more populated beach front cities of Hikkaduwa or Beruwela, Unawatuna is a good place for tourists seeking some quiet time.
In addition to its beautiful scenery, Unawatuna is famous for snorkeling and turtle hatcheries along the coastline of its beaches. Little centres that offer scuba diving equipment as well as classes dot the coastline, while the coral reef near the Rumassala range is a frequented spot by many scuba divers. Apart from this, the rocky range is turning into an excellent place to do some bird watching, adding to the list of activities to keep tourists occupied.
Surfers have not been forgotten at this location and there are quite a few good reef breaks. The nature of the surf at Unawatuna is such that beginners to surfing will feel quite comfortable. The best time to go surfing in Unawatuna is early morning, as the sun and the heat does not interfere since the sun is not fully exposed.
At 5km south of Galle, Unawatuna offers a variety of means for accommodation. A typical Sri Lanka holiday on the beach could be had at any of the small budget hotels that serve tasty local cuisine. But for tourists hoping to do more on their Sri Lanka travel expedition could access the Truly Sri Lanka tourist site for details of more activities in the area.
