Kuala Lumpur is a major tourist destination, with many historical and cultural highlights including the Independence Square, the Kuala Lumpur Tower, the National Palace and the National Museum. Kuala Lumpur had modest origins as a small mining town which developed into a trading post. Mining revenues enabled the town to expand, and in 1896 Kuala Lumpur was selected as the capital of the recently formed Federated Malay States. A variety of different communities settled in Kuala Lumpur, including the Chinese, Malays, Indian Chettiars and Muslims. Kuala Lumpur was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and later the Federation of Malaya gained independence from British rule in 1957.

The zoo houses three Malaysian elephants which have felt at home here since they were mere calves, and are therefore completely tame. The zoo’s Cat Walk features magnificent lions and tigers, a fascinating sight particularly at feeding time. The Mammal Kingdom contains an assortment of wild dogs and jungle cats, along with other creatures such as raccoons, capybaras and otters.
