Cardiff: A Seriously Good City

From Edinburgh in the north, to London in the south, the UK can lay claim to at least two of Europe’s finest capital cities.

Indeed, the UK’s four constituent countries of Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales, each offer a principal city of great cultural and economic significance, though not all of them receive the acclaim they perhaps deserve.

Situated on the southern coast of Wales by the Severn Estuary and the Bristol Channel, Cardiff has been the Welsh capital since 1905 and today boasts a population of over 300,00 people. Cardiff is a major centre for tourism and is the most popular destination in the whole of Wales, with almost twelve million people making the trip to the Welsh capital each year.

For those who don’t know a lot about Cardiff, it’s perhaps worth noting a curious fact about the city: it is the closest capital city to London, which may go some way towards explaining why Cardiff perhaps doesn’t receive the accolades it deserves, as living in the shadows of a major metropolis such as London can’t be easy.

However, Frommer’s Guide listed Cardiff in the top thirteen must see global destinations in 2008, whilst Lonely Planet referred to the city as the epitome of cool. So this helps to illustrate what we’re talking about here – Cardiff is a seriously good city.

So what exactly does this city have to offer? Well, for history and culture there is a myriad of museums, including the National Museum Cardiff, which is an absolute gem and has an array of art collections, including pieces by Renoir. The museum also has some works of 20th century art by the likes of Dewhurst, Lowry and Kokoschka, whilst there are usually a number of fantastic exhibitions, covering topics such as Darwinian science.

For sport lovers, few arenas can match the Millennium Stadium, which is where the Welsh national rugby and football teams play. The stadium also hosts a number of other great sporting events such as Rally, Speedway and Boxing. The Millennium Stadium is the second largest in the world that has a fully retractable roof and it can accommodate almost 75,000 fans. Even for those who aren’t so keen to catch a top sporting even here, it’s worth going on a guided stadium tour to really get to grips with this phenomenal architectural achievement.

Few cities can match Cardiff for nightlife. An abundance of bars, clubs, restaurants and live entertainment options make it a splendid choice for those on a weekend trip or an extended break. Coupled with the fact that Cardiff is situated so close to London, means that accommodation is always in great demand in the Welsh capital. Those on a budget won’t be disappointed, as the Cardiff cheap hotels offer great value for money, with many in a good central location offering easy access to all the main sights.

With a budget bed in a central Cardiff location, it’s possible to sample all this fantastic capital has to offer, whether it’s culture, sport or a night out on the town!

  1. Cardiff is growing at such a rapid pace, The new John Lewis has just opened and whole new shpping sections being built. I cant believe there was no mention of the Castle too! – one of the most prominent features cardiff has to offer in my opinion!
