The “normal” form of holiday in Ibiza seems to take the following form: sleep till late morning; make your way to the beach for some refreshments and sun bathing; socialise in the early evening; short nap to top up the energy; find an evening venue(s), eat, drink and party till the early hours; start again tomorrow. Obviously, this format suits the younger visitors marvellously. But it does not do full justice to this lovely island, which has plenty to offer any age group.

It was the beaches of Ibiza which first attracted tourists, and these have not changed. Around a very long coastline there are about 18 km of various beaches. Quite a lot of these are extremely small and secluded and probably only reachable by motor scooter or on foot. But there is still a choice of easily accessible beaches, mostly in the vicinity of the main hotel areas.

Although Ibiza Town itself has no beaches, the area immediately to the west, at Figueras and Playa d’en Bossa provide excellent facilities. Both areas, together with Ibiza town have plenty of nightlife, so provide all that is needed, in one place.

Slightly further along the coast, from Santa Eularia to the northerly tip of the island, the beaches are all sandy and accessible; ideal for families and soaking up the sun.

The northern coastline tends to be somewhat rockier and the beaches are smaller. Around Sant Antoni, the beaches are surrounded by coast and provide shelter if it is windy. The north coast is more popular with families or visitors preferring a gentler holiday – the nightlife is not so frenetic.

Wherever you spend your day, come the evening, the nightlife calls. Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni are definitely the centres of the renowned Ibiza club scene. For a traditional start to a night out, go to the Café del Mar in Sant Antoni. Although it is not the newest or flashest venue it has a real claim to fame – the sunsets. Sit on the terraces of the Café with your first drink of the evening and watch the sun go down over the Mediterranean. Magic!

Then it’s off into town to the club of your choice. There is a wide range of music, dancing (or not), sexual orientation, and themes available in an uncountable number of venues (one street in Sant Antoni has 100 bars). There are even buses laid on to take you to the most “in” places.

The season’s opening parties are at the beginning of June and then it’s party all the way through the summer.

The Escalade marathon also takes place on the weekend prior to the festival, attracting more participants each year in a race around the Old City that has fast become Switzerland’s most prestigious sporting event, offering a stunning spectacle for visitors.
