The Parco delle Madonie is a regional nature reserve established in 1989. The park includes the mountain chain of Madonie, located on the northern coast of Sicily, between the rivers Imera and Pollina. The park hosts more than half of plant species in Sicily, and in particular most of those present only in Sicily. In the park there are over half the species of birds, all species of mammals and more than half of invertebrate species in Sicily.

Noteworthy are also the geological peculiarities. Madonie geology is the focus of studies and research started since the sixties. Just for the its geological interest, the Madonie park since 2003 joined the European Geopark Network to which participate more than twenty Europeans parks.

From the geographical point of view the Park can be divided into three areas: the valley of the territory of northern Imera, the southern Imera valley and the Salso and the Pollina valley. The three regions reflect a natural correspondence with historical identities and relations that exist with the surrounding area.

The position of the current massive rocks of Madonie is the result of changes in a period of 40-50 million years. According to recent calculations, the average speed of lifting of the north-eastern Sicily in a million years would vary between one and eight centimeters every one hundred years (in the Madonie from five to six centimeters).

Acireale (Jaciriali or more commonly Jaci in Sicilian) is an Italian city of 52,914 inhabitants in the province of Catania, the most populous and important  after the capital. Of uncertain origin, today the urban layout is typical of late-medieval city in Sicily. It rises in the middle of the Ionian coast of  Sicily at 15 km from Catania. The city was built on a plateau on a terrace of lava, called the Timpa with its 150 meters high, puts the town almost  overlooking the Ionian Sea. The coast, where there are several villages, is characterized by lava reef.

There is also a certain richness of sources of water  and greenery and the surrounding area has grown, especially in citrus. (The Timpa is a cliff about 80 m high near the coast of Acireale. Since 1999 it has  become nature reserve).

The population is distributed to just over 60% in the city and the rest reside in different localities. The main links of the city are the A18 connecting  Messina to Catania and the state railway station with a traffic of long distance trains and regional interest towards Catania and Messina.

The city’s name derives from Greek mythology, where there was room for a deity called Aci. He was a shepherd fell in love with Galatea, which in turn was  loved by the cyclops Polyphemus, who crushed his rival under a rock. Shepherd was born from the blood of a river called by the Greeks Akis now “disappeared”  underground. The center of Acireale is the Piazza del Duomo, onto which some of the most important buildings of the city, including the Cathedral, the  Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, the Municipal Palace, the Palace Modò. In the center of Acireale there are other historical buildings, churches and 
monuments of great interest.
